Edward Kennedy is elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.

November 6, 1962

Kennedy (D), with 1,162,611 votes, defeats George Cabot Lodge (R), with 877,669. In Boston, Kennedy receives 160,985 votes and Lodge 61,149. Kennedy is the grandson of former Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald and the brother of President John F. Kennedy and attorney general Robert F. Kennedy. Lodge is the grandson of Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge. Kennedy is reelected until 2009.*
